Margaret is listed as "widow of Richard" as of 1934.
New York City directories list a Richard Varick (Boatman/Mariner) with various addresses between 1809 and 1822. The 1834-1835 directory lists Marjory Varick, widow of Richard.NYC voter registration in 1819 says that Richard was 40 years old and had 4 males and 5 females in his household (John James was not born yet) and that he lived on Pike Street.
The April 1883 edition of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record lists in the records of the 1st and 2nd Presbyterian Church NYC that Richard Van Varick (b. abt 1781) married Marjory Lockwood on 16 NOV 1802. There is a 6 year difference in the dateof birth between the two but I have used the date in Bailey's book as she states this info taken from the family bible."

40. Samuel Kittredge
Died "at the residence of Samuel Hughs, No. 336 South Broadway."
41. Laura O. Newton
Laura died "at the family residence, No. 17 Horace street, July 14th, at 3 p.m., of congestive chills..."
Laura was 69 years 10 months when she died.
"Of Shrewsbury"In 1829, after the death of Laura's father, Nahum Newton of Shrewsbury was appointed Laura's guardian. She was fourteen at the time. The estate of her father, also Nahum Newton, left $62 for Laura. In 1835 Nahum Newton and Laura petitioned thecourt to change her guardian to Mark B. Knowlton. That request was granted. I assume that this is Mark Bacheller Knowlton (no. 4617), who was married to Betsey Smith. Mark would have been abt. forty-four at the time and he and his wife wouldhave three children. Mark is a distant relative of Laura's (assuming that we have the correct information about her father being Nahum Newton); so distant, in fact, that the relationship is inconsequential.
"This John Campbell is the one who signed over the property of the original John to the uncle William Halliday. He was the first and probably original New Dealer. He didn't have to work to earn his wealth, so why not give it away, and he did.""Grandfather John Campbell had two cousins, Matthew and Robert Dempsey, who fought in the British Army in the Sepoy rebellion in India and were at the famous relief of Lucknow. The colonel of the regiment reported that the British tamed everythingin India, including wild beasts, but they never could tame Robert Dempsey. He knew every guard house in India, FROM THE INSIDE."
